Walk a while in my shoes

Hi! Thanks for stopping in. I have been thinking about how to build a cohesive use case for a data transformation project. And it really illuminates for me as a consultant the importance of being in step with the operational delivery team to understand both their processes and how they experience the process as people.

The project management approach must be both operationally integrative and transformational at the same time.

Not being a part of the team is akin to standing outside a window and looking in, catching only glimpses of the experience and making assumptions and judgement based on very little evidence.

This is not an effective way to support an operational transition because inevitably the solution will leave out important details and nuances that are needed to create a true solution.

Standing on the outside has never been my approach. My approach is to stand in their shoes, and to understand their experience as one of them. When I am able to do this, I do my best work and my client is also better off for it. The transition from the old way to the new way is seamless, efficient, thoughtful, and respectful as it takes into account the very experience of each person in the workforce who is involved in delivering an outcome and ultimately implementing the desired transformation.

Just thinking.

Lynn
